I love this proposed Brooklyn Nets/NY Knicks rivalry. When it comes to sports, New Yorkers as a whole are: arrogant, tremendously competitive, delusional, border line crazy, die-hard and most importantly, always right. Right about anything and everything.
This adds to the many reasons why I’m reveling in the fact that I am a New Yorker. This is probably going to be the most exciting season I’ve had in a while.
…But this isn’t about me
One one end you have the Brooklyn Nets fans calling the NY Knicks (and their fans): old, washed up has-beens who will never win nor be able to compete with the new, cooler team of NYC.
Then you have the NY Knicks fans calling the Brooklyn Nets fans: wish-they-lived-in-the-city’ers who ride Jay-Z’s coattail and STILL won’t make the playoffs this season.
So let’s take it off the court and go round for round to see who’s better.
Round One- Both teams upped the ante by hosting events during the pre-season.
Nets– Jay-Z’s concerts weren’t “official” Brooklyn Nets events but it’s all linked and the Brooklyn Nets are counting it as a reason why you should jump the Knicks-ship and climb aboard with the Nets.
Knicks- Hosted a much less publicized and glamorized event at the Beacon Theatre, introducing the Knicks City Dancers and the team.
Winner; NETS. It was a valiant effort from the Knicks but even though all 8 of Jay’s concerts consisted him dawdling around the stage for 2 hours, he invited Beyonce out the last night which means the Nets won this round. I would be remiss if I didn’t add that Jay-Z almost disqualified the Nets this round by inviting Memphis Bleek out one night.
Round Two- Both teams have brand new arenas.
Nets– Built a brand new state of the art arena with a nightclub, bars, gift shops, the works. It’s really a beautiful space- competing with the Magic for best arena.
Knicks– The Knicks have been renovating their arena for a while now and they’re slated to unveil the new arena in two weeks.
Winner; Knicks. Although it’s no doubt that the Nets will probably have a better looking space, MSG is the most famous arena in the world. The amount of history in that place is unmatched you almost feel the energy of the greats when you’re in the garden.
Round Three– Manhattan vs. Brooklyn
Nets– Brooklyn is no longer up and coming, it’s a place where people who move here actually prefer to live. There’s more space, it’s a tad cheaper than the city, and it boasts an abundance of popular bars, restaurants and beautiful parks.
Knicks– I don’t think Manhattan really needs an explanation.
Winner; Knicks. I, too, love Brooklyn but due to the fact that there are so many places that you still can’t go unless you know Mike aka Crazy Eyes Killer from the corner store, I have to say Manhattan still trumps BK.
Round Four– Gear
Nets– The Nets debuted: a brand new logo, new fan gear, dancer uniforms and new jerseys for the team.
Knicks– Same gear, different day.
Winner; Nets. I don’t think it’s a shocker that the Nets have awesome gear to accompany their “cool” appeal. The Knicks gear is ok too, it’s just not as good as the Nets’. No contest.
It’s a tie in my books so far so I’ll end with a personal story. I recently had a run-in with an avid Knicks fan who asked me who my team is this season- the Knicks or the Nets. When I replied that I wasn’t really picking either of the teams but cheering for both, he hit me with the most disgusted, hurt, and confused look that he could muster. He may have even shed a tear.
This experience has taught me that no New Yorkers can be on the fence this season, you must choose a team that you’re rolling with. So no more of this stalling.
Who’s side are you on?! Knicks or Nets?
