Tyson Chandler and his wife, Kimberly, recently travelled to a far and distant land to help people lacking many of the key essentials of life that we all usually take for granted, like: food, electricity, clothing, a home. This area, recently ravaged by a destructive hurricane, is heavily populated with children, elderly people and of course, Knicks fans.
They went to Far Rockaway, Queens. About 30-40 minutes outside of Manhattan, NYC.
Right now, you may be thinking “It’s great that they did that but big deal! Plenty of celebrities have gone out to a destroyed place to show their face/support.” If that’s what you thought, you would be right. Tyson’s visit was vastly different, though.
Tyson didn’t go with a huge entourage.
Tyson didn’t even go with security.
Tyson actually stayed for HOURS.
Tyson actually walked the line (of over a thousand) people to shake their hands and take pictures with them.
All of this is special because these people have no hope, no “light” in their day and no one cares. Most of these people were already very poor so there is no savings to tap into, no family they can call up. No nothing.
Tyson doesn’t have enough money to change the conditions in Far Rockaway but he did would he could and that was be present. He provided the “light” in those people’s day. He played ball with the kids. He hugged mothers and kissed babies. He talked to them about keeping their heads up. He took a million pictures. He talked about the Knicks’ season.
He treated them like family instead of just showing face and getting out of there in an hour.
He not only donated his time and a few resources, he gave those people a reason to happy- even if for only one day. That’s just as important as donating anything else because he gave them hope. THIS is how people should be using their celebrity.
Happiness begets a positive attitude. A positive attitude begets faith. Faith begets change.
What have you contributed?
Tyson will be spending his day off today (December 1) back out in Far Rockaway. Go out and volunteer if you can.
